Bulk Ferrofluid

Bulk Ferrofluid
The drive to create a magnetic liquid came during the early years (1960s) of the NASA program. Steven Papell at NASA was tasked with controlling and directing liquid rocket fuel in outer space. Papell envisioned a rocket fuel that could be controlled in zero gravity by powerful magnets.
Fast forward to today, magnetic liquids have a wide range of applications in many industries, from medical to automotive. You may have seen commercials on television or videos on the Internet that show what looks like black oil taking on a life of its own. These were ferrofluids, exposed to a magnet.
